The 2019 MTV Video Music Awards are fast approaching! So in honor of the upcoming award show, we took a look back at some of the wildest performance costumes of all time. Boy was there a lot of them.
The same year Marilyn Manson walked the red carpet with Rose McGowan in her complete see-through shimmery dress, he took to the stage for “The Dope Show” performance in a full-on blue latex unitard. Other stars like Miley Cyrus, Lady Gaga and Katy Perry have worn wild looks on and off the red carpet. But from Gaga’s all-white square-headpiece to Cyrus’ barley-there alien look, there’s definitely a few standouts.
For the 1997 awards, the rapper looked like a more modern-day Egyptian goddess in a sparkly gold fringe two-piece and headpiece.
Possibly the strangest on the list, it’s not all that surprising that “The Beautiful People” singer donned a long-sleeve, blue latex unitard with suggestive embellishments all over the front for the 1998 show.
Now it’s not necessarily what the “I’m a Slave 4 U” singer wore to perform the song in 2001 that’s a lot, but the giant boa constrictor definitely solidified her spot on here. After all, she wore it like an accessory more than anything.
What would a performance in the early 2000s be without low-cut, tight, ripped pants and a bra-like top?
Essentially walking piece of art, the “Just Dance” singer opened the 2013 VMAs in one of the most epic looks.
As a host for 2015’s show, the former Disney Channel star did not disappoint when it came to unpredictability. As memorable as her twerking moment and costume was, this alien-like outfit seems much more bizarre to Us.
In a full-on holographic astronaut suit, the “Teenage Dreams” singer took was perfectly on brand for her 2017 persona, which is probably the reason it kind of… worked.
