ALIYA

Both hear the door crack open. Their faces go dim as they look at each other.

 

JANE

(Whispers)

Your last prayers?

 

ALIYA

I hate you.

 

JANE

Maybe We should check who is at the door.

 

ALIYA

I am so afraid, I can’t move

 

JANE

Oh, it’s just my phone.

 

ALIYA

What!

 

JANE

My new massage tune.

 

Aliya sighs, taking a good look at the room, Poster of unicorn on the wall.

ALIYA (V.O.)

More unicorns

Another poster of several unicorns on the wall.

ALIYA (V.O.)

Teddies.

Teddies on the bed, Poster of Katy Perry.

ALIYA

What is this?

 

JANE

(laughing)

You uncle is gay. whoa, who would have thought?

ALIYA

He can’t be.

JANE

Really. How can you explain this?

 

ALIYA walks through the room and then to the drawer. She opens it and jumps right back.

ALIYA

Oh my God.

JANE

What?

JANE rushes to take a pick.

JANE (CONT’D)

Whooooaaa. Your uncle is a gay gangster.

What is this? Your mum’s name is

Ramat, right.

ALIYA

Yeah.

JANE

A latter from your mum.

 

Jane picks the letter from the drawer.

Sitting room, Jane is sitting, Aliya pacing back and forth.

JANE

Sit.

ALIYA

Did you see that?

 

JANE

Fine your uncle is gay and a gangster.

You should be happy. No one

can mess with you.

ALIYA

He lives with a gun.

JANE

Technically you stay with your

uncle who has a gun.

ALIYA

He could be an armed robber.

Maybe that is what he does.

JANE

Are you going read letter?

You can’t stay mad at your mum

Forever.

She takes another look at the letter.

 

A Year ago

 

Aliya’s room, Aliya with a novel in her bed, her mom enters, at the frame of the door.

 

RAMAT

Can I come in?

 

ALIYA

Sure.

 

Ramat walks in, sits on the bed with her.

 

ALIYA

Why do you let him hit you?

 

RAMAT

That is not what I came here for.

I thought we could talk about you.

 

ALIYA

What about me?

 

RAMAT

How have you been doing?

 

ALIYA

PRESENT DAY

 

The sitting room, Aliya playing a saxophone as Musa enters, she stops.

 

MUSA

Hey. How are you?

 

ALIYA

Fine? How was work?

 

MUSA

Good. I met a crazy fool. A grown

ass man licking lollipop. Can you

believe that.

 

ALIYA (V.O.)

A grown ass man who loves unicorns

and sleeps with teddies. Can you

believe that.

 

MUSA

Your mum called. You haven’t been

picking her calls, She just wanted

to say hi. Pick her calls please.

She is worried about you. Call her.

 

ALIYA (V.O.)

I don’t get it. He is so nice to

me, why should I be afraid of him.

I mean teddies are cute, they are

not scary, but the gun, Why the gun?

 

MUSA

Aliya, did you hear what I said?

Call your mum.

 

MUSA leaves for his room.

 

ALIY’S ROOM

She is beneath her sheets. The beam of light from her phone reveals the letter beside her. She flips it open to read, not certain about it all, she closes and goes to put it in her drawer.

 

A YEAR AGO

 

At school: ALIYA and JANE staring at SEGUN and BOSE at the front of the class as they flirt. BOSE gives them a silly look.

 

JANE

Can I beat her face off now?

 

ALIYA

Yeah.

 

School, music studio, JAMES, ALIYA and JANE.

 

JAMES is playing the guitar alongside Aliya playing the Saxophone.

The melody of the guitar playing and people singing fills the

atmosphere.

They finish playing and give themselves cheer.

 

 

 

JANE

That was really beautiful. So do

you have a girlfriend.

 

ALIYA

Jane!

 

JANE

What he is cute.

 

JAMES

Yes I do.

 

ALIYA

That was really nice.

 

JAMES

Well you are good yourself.

 

MRS ANITA enters alongside BOSE, SEGUN’S new girlfriend with her saxophone. BOSE Just moved to an edge playing her sax.

 

MISS ANITA walks to ALIYA.

 

MRS ANITA

I was looking for you.

 

ALIYA

Good afternoon ma.

 

MRS ANITA

There is a competition coming

up, and you will be representing

the school.

 

ALIYA

What?

 

MRS ANITA

It’s an inter school music

competition, nothing really big,

but our school will be hosting it

this year.

 

ALIYA

I don’t think I want to.

 

MRS ANITA

Well too late I already filled your name.

So you have to double

your rehearsals if you want to win.

 

Mrs. Anita checks her watch.

 

MRS ANITA (CONT’D)

I have to see the principal.

 

She leaves.

JAMES

Well, I am wishing you good luck.

 

He leaves.

 

Bose walks over to ALIYA and JANE With her saxophone on her neck.

 

BOSE

Do you know why she chose you? Its

not because you good, hell you

don’t stand a chance against me.

Mr. Tega pleaded for you. And don’t

think that for one second I won’t

take it from you if you slip, just

like I took your boyfriend.

 

Angry JANE setting her fist, ALIYA held her fist.

 

ALIYA

Point taken, do you want to leave now?

 

BOSE

I have my eyes on you girl.

Walking away.

 

JANE

Well come back here and I would

have my fist on your face.

 

She slams the door.

 

JANE (CONT’D)

Ahhhh. Why didn’t you let me hit

her. I would have ripped out her

eyes.

 

ALIYA

If you had hit you are likely to be suspended.

 

JANE

She makes me want to beat her up

anytime I see her. Next time, next

time is war.

 

ALIYA

Ade said he likes you.

 

JANE

(Happy)

Really?

 

ALIYA

No.

She walks out of the room.

 

JANE

Don’t play with my feeling like

that again.
